| Train to the End of the World, Tierra del Fuego National Park, Argentina |

The southernmost railway in the world. This narrow-gauge steam train was originally built to transport prisoners in the former penal colony of Ushuaia to the forest to harvest trees for the growing community. The ride is brief at only a little over an hour but this unique train’s history and its destination, Tierra del Fuego National Park makes it a good shore excursion for a South America cruise.

| Copper Canyon Railway, Mexico |

If you were asked what was the largest, deepest canyon in North America and answered the “Grand Canyon” you would be wrong. While the Grand Canyon is certainly very dramatic and stunning the correct answer would be the Copper Canyon in Mexico. The Barranca del Cobre or “Copper Canyon” is actually a series of 20 canyons carved out of the Sierra Madre Mountain range and was practically inaccessible until the Copper Canyon Railway, or Chihuahua al Pacifico was completed. The railway which features 36 bridges and 87 tunnels that winds through harrowing switchbacks on sheer cliffs on its daily journey from sea level to 8,000 feet. It's an amazing feat of engineering that is one of North America's most scenic railways.

Train travel is an excellent way for the traveler to explore this ancient country. This train line connects the cities of North and South Vietnam and is dubbed the Reunification Express. However, there are many train sets that traverse this line and no single train carries the official designation of this name. From Hanoi, it is possible to connect to other trains to reach Beijing, Hong Kong and even Europe via the Trans-Siberian Railway.

There are many scenic railways in the Pacific Northwest around Seattle, Portland, Vancouver and points east. Amtrak has several trains that service this area including two of its most scenic long distance train’s: The Empire Builder (Chicago to Seattle) and the Coast Starlight (Los Angeles to Seattle). From Seattle, Amtrak’s Cascades travels north 156 miles to Vancouver, British Columbia where Canada’s VIA rail offers some picturesque excursion trains to Whistler, Banff and east across the Canadian Rockies. In Alaska, there are several train trips that would excite the railfans including the White Pass & Yukon Railway in Skagway (considered one of the top 10 Rail tours on earth) and the Alaskan Railway that travels deep into the Alaskan backcountry to Denali National Park. | The Trans-Mongolian Express, Moscow to Beijing Railway |

This is not only the world's most famous train journey but also the longest. At 6,000 miles, the Trans-Siberian is the largest and busiest rail network in the world. It provides a vital link between Europe and Asia as it traverses empty spaces of the Eurasian steppes. One of the most scenic routes on the railway is the Trans-Mongolian Express from Beijing to Moscow. This twelve-day tour visits three capitals (Beijing, China; Ulaan Baatar, Mongolia and Moscow, Russia) allows travelers to experience the cultural diversity and utter vastness of Eurasia.
